A 60-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by an autorickshaw driver and his friends on Tuesday, after a squabble between them. The rickshaw driver and the deceased, Duryodhan Kadam, had argued because the driver refused to ply to the Thane railway station.
Kadam was rushed to a private hospital at night, but was declared dead before admission.
The Wagle Estate police have arrested the driver Akhtar Ali Sheikh, 25, Dilshad Khan, 23, and Junaid Sheikh, 32, and registered a case of murder against them. They are on the lookout for the remaining six accused.
Kadam had come to the Indiranagar naka rickshaw stand on Tuesday evening, accompanied by a relative.
"Jayshree Gaikwad, Kadam's relative, had come to his Savarkarnagar residence for the Ganesh festival. Kadam accompanied her to the rickshaw stand and went to Akhtar's autorickshaw, asking him to take her to the station. The accused said that there was a problem with his vehicle, and he would ply after some time," said deputy commissioner of police (Zone V) Ashok Morale.
The two began to argue, and Kadam called his youngest son, Sushil, 22. "Sushil thought that Akhtar had hit his father. So, he started to beat Akhtar up. Akhtar's friends and other locals joined the brawl. In total, nine people started beating up Kadam and Sushil. While Sushil sustained minor injuries, Kadam received blows on his chest and other vital organs," he said.
