A 24-year-old woman allegedly robbed a businessman of gold ornaments worth Rs4 lakh, after asking him for a lift in the autorickshaw he was travelling in at Borivli last week.

A 24-year-old woman allegedly robbed a businessman of gold ornaments worth Rs4 lakh, after asking him for a lift in the autorickshaw he was travelling in at Borivli last week. On Tuesday, the police arrested her from outside Borivli station while she was waiting for an autorickshaw.

Viththal Narayan, the 52-year-old victim, was taking jewellery worth Rs4 lakh to a jewellery shop to sell as he needed cash for his newly purchased house. But, the Devipada resident found the shop closed and took an autorickshaw from outside Borivli (East) station to head for home.

After travelling some distance in the rickshaw, he saw Wasida Harshad Gaini standing at the side of the road waving down his autorickshaw. She appeared desperate for a lift, he told the police. He said he felt sorry for her and decided to drop her to her destination if it was on the way to his house, and share the fare with her.

Gaini then spoke cordially to Narayan inside the rickshaw, police said. When the autorickshaw reached the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the woman alighted and somehow took Narayan’s bag containing the gold ornaments without him noticing it. Narayan realised he had been cheated only when he reached home. He rushed back to the national park, but could not find Giani. He then approached the Kasturba Marg police station and registered a complaint against her.

The police said the gold ornaments have been recovered from Giani and she has been sent to judicial custody.

“We are investigating if Gaini has cheated more people in a similar manner,” he said.
