Students from Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools who did not take the Class 10 board exam this year will be able to apply offline to junior colleges in the state but the state government is yet to decide whether the admission would be final or provisional.
State government officials met on Monday to discuss the issue but did not reach a decision. The state education department has now invited chairperson of the CBSE, Vineet Joshi, to clarify the board’s stand on whether a school final exam and a board exam can be treated as equivalent.
Officials said that the admission of CBSE students to state junior colleges would depend on whether the CBSE interprets a school final exam as equivalent to a board exam. This was the first year that the CBSE gave Class 10 students the option of appearing for either a school final exam or a board exam.
In circulars issued in the past year, the CBSE had recommended that students planning to leave the board should take the board exam. However, in its most recent letter to the state education department the CBSE requested that school exam takers and board exam takers be treated on par.
“All along, the CBSE said that those leaving the board should opt for the board exam. Why are they now saying that the two are the same?” said V Radha, who is holding temporary charge as the principal secretary of the school education department.

{{/usCountry}}The Maharashtra state board will also be involved in the process and study the examination process of the CBSE to decide on whether the certification is equivalent or not, said Radha.
It is not clear yet what conditions students will have to fulfill if they have to take provisional admission.
This year 5,680 students in the state appeared for the school final exam and 15,969 took the board exam.
“Had we known about the government’s stand earlier, our whole planning would have been different,” said the parent of a student who was suddenly transferred to Mumbai. “At this stage we really do not know what to do. We will have to wait and hope for the best.”
