A 24-year-old call centre employee died and his colleague was grievously injured when a car driven by a college student crashed into them on Link Road in Borivli around 6.30 am on Friday.
The accused, Pratik Shetty, was arrested three hours after the incident took place.
The police said the deceased, Anoop Makhariya, and his colleague, Milind Salve, 33, employees of JP Morgan at Mindspace in Malad, were returning home after the night shift on Makhariya’s bike when the incident took place. Both are Borivli residents, and Makhariya was dropping Salve home.
A final-year science student, the accused, Pratik Shetty, is also a Borivli resident and was driving his friend Shivani Rane’s Toyota Corolla when he lost control. “Makhariya dropped me outside my building and we were talking when a speeding Corolla rammed right into the bike. It happened before we could react,” Salve, who is recuperating at the Mandepeshwar hospital, told the police.
The accused was driving back from the airport after dropping a friend and heading back to Rane’s place when the accident took place. There were three other occupants in the car, one of whom rushed Salve and Makhariya to Bhagwati hospital and fled. Makhariya was declared dead at the hospital.

{{/usCountry}}“We traced Rane through the car registration number and learnt of Shetty’s whereabouts,” a police officer from Borivli police station said. Shetty was arrested without much delay, at 9.30am.
“Shetty has been booked for causing death due to negligence,” said Bhagwan Chate, senior police inspector, Borivli police station.
The police are now waiting for Shetty’s medical reports to ascertain whether he was drunk when the mishap occurred.
