Court likely to decide on Rai’s plea to turn approver today

A Mumbai court is likely to decide today whether to accept the plea of Indrani Mukerjea’s driver Shyamwar Rai, to turn an approver in the Sheena Bora murder case. The court during its last hearing had said it would hear all the advocates in the case and then pass an order.

Earlier, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) gave no objection to Rai’s plea of turning approver and also seeking pardon in the case. CBI in their one-page reply had said that Rai has already given a statement before the magistrate in which he has specifically stated that the said confession statement was made voluntarily and without any pressure, fear and instigation. “Subject to the condition that if the accused makes a full and true disclosure of all the facts of the crime, the prosecution has no objection to granting pardon to the accused,” read the reply of CBI.

Indrani’s lawyer had sought time to file a reply to Rai’s application and said they need to argue before the court before an order is passed. Peter Mukerjea had also sought a copy of Rai’s statement.

On April 24, 2012, Peter Mukerjea’s wife Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and Rai had allegedly strangulated Indrani’s daughter Sheena, and later disposed her body in a thickly-forested area in Gagode village of Raigad district, according to the Khar police. The murder came to light after the arrest of driver Rai by Khar police officials in an arms act case. Indrani was arrested on August 25 last year in the murder case. Later on, the CBI arrested Peter also in the case.
