The “accidental death” case of multinational company employee Varuni Sasani (23), was transferred by police commissioner Arup Patnaik from the Kalachowkie police to the crime branch last week. Varuni died after allegedly falling from her friend Karan Gupta’s apartment in a multi-storeyed residential tower at Lalbaug on November 18 last year.

Sasani had leased out an apartment in Vijaya Residency at Lalbaug along with a friend. She had been in the city for four months prior to her death. The Kalachowkie police had registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR).
“Varuni’s father, Dr Sasani, has suspected foul play in the events leading to his daughter’s death and written a letter to the police. Hence the investigation has been transferred from the local police to the crime branch on the commissioner’s orders,” Nisar Tamboli, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Crime, said.
ACP RB Poman (Kalachowkie division) had said that the police suspected that the girl had consumed alcohol before the incident. However, no medical report has conclusively established this so far. The blood test reports are still awaited.
Gupta had rushed down after Varuni fell, and with the help of those present, rushed her to the KEM hospital where she was declared dead.
