A 33-year-old driver was arrested on Tuesday for breaking into his employer’s house in Govandi after he was denied a salary hike.
Iftikhar Sheikh worked for Shilpa Shirpur, a widow and middle-aged bank employee, for 14 years.
He quit recently after he was denied a raise in salary.
Shirpur stays in the flat on Ranade Road with her son.
After she found valuables worth Rs 75,000 missing from her house, she lodged a complaint on Monday.
“Last month, he had demanded a raise in his Rs 7,000 salary. He had reportedly also asked for a bonus, as he needed to send it back to his aged mother in Bihar. However, when his employer refused to give him a raise, he quit the job,” said Shashikant Yadav, police sub-inspector of Shivaji Nagar police station.
“Four days later, he broke into the house and robbed electronic appliances and valuables,” added Yadav.
The officers investigating the case found that the thief had used duplicate keys to gain entry into the house.
“Duplicate keys can be made by persons who either have or had access to the house and Shirpur told us that their driver had recently left the job. We then got Sheikh’s mobile phone number from Shirpur and procured the phone records. We called the number, which Sheikh had called frequently and that person told us that we would find him driving a taxi at Mumbai Central. We then nabbed Sheikh,” said Yadav. The police have recovered all the stolen booty.
