The BJP government on Friday said it would do away with unfriendly policies to ensure that investors in the industrial sector prefer Maharashtra as an investment destination.

It also announced that new industries setting up plants in the state would be presented with the letter of intent within a week.

“We are going to take measures to ensure that interested parties get the letter of intent, similar to a memorandum of understanding (MoU), within six to seven days. We will bring in transparency to the administration. We want Maharashtra to get back its first position [among states],” said the new industries minister Prakash Mehta, in an interaction with the media.

Mehta also said sufficient infrastructure would be developed in the state’s Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) areas.

“We found that several small and medium-size industries had been shut down in the past few years because of lack of infrastructure. We have decided to raise adequate infrastructure in MIDC areas so these industries can flourish again,” he said. MIDC has more than 84,000 hectares of land under its control, while about 10,000 hectares will be acquired soon.

Mehta also responded to former industries minister Narayan Rane’s comments about his Gujarati heritage. Rane had said being a Gujarati, Mehta would not take a firm stand when it came to competition from the state.

“I am a minister of Maharashtra. So I will work to get investors to Maharashtra,” said Mehta.
