Firm’s website crashes after fake traffic is diverted to it

A company website was on Monday deliberately thrown out of gear, after unidentified miscreants allegedly diverted excessive traffic to the website because of which it crashed.

The company, Future Bazaar, has approached the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell of the Mumbai police to investigate the matter.

The website is still not functioning, 48 hours after it crashed.

“The website is used to sell products put up for sale every fortnight. On Monday, we realised that the website could not be accessed because someone had diverted excess traffic to the site. We had received an e-mail over the weekend threatening us with consequences if we did not shut down the website,” said Rajeev Prakash, the CEO of Future Bazaar.

“The mail was sent by some international group that we suspect is behind diverting artificial traffic to our website.”

He added, “Our online transactions have been suspended because the prospective customers cannot log on to our website. All transactions are taking place over the phone.”

An officer from the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell confirmed that an application had been received from Future Bazaar and they were investigating the case before registering an official complaint as per procedure that they follow.
