The state government should form a high-level committee to implement its policy requiring doctors to serve in state-run civic or defence hospitals for two years after obtaining broad specialty and super specialty medical degrees, said the Bombay HC on Wednesday.

A division bench of justice BH Marlapalle and justice Nishita Mhatre said the committee could comprise principal secretary of the medical education department, the director of medical education and research and the deans of state-run medical colleges in the city.

The court also said the state will require either to create super-numeric posts to accommodate such doctors on posts befitting their qualifications, or relieve the doctors who could not be accommodated on commensurate posts. The court was hearing petitions filed by 54 super-specialty and broad-specialty doctors after they were asked by the civic body to join the posts of medical officers for serving their bond periods. The court may issue final orders on Thursday.
