The Bombay high court stayed proceedings of a defamation case in a Chandigarh court, filed against former Mumbai police commissioner Hasan Gafoor by Hoshiar Singh, father of inspector general of police (IGP), Parambir Singh.
The division bench of justice BH Marlapalle and justice UD Salvi admitted a petition filed by Gafoor, seeking to quash the proceedings for the final hearing.
Gafoor, who retired on December 31, 2010 as the DGP of the Anti-Corruption Bureau had moved the high court after he received summons from a magistrate’s court at Chandigarh following a defamation case filed by Hoshiar Singh.
The 82-year-old father of the serving Maharashtra IGP took objection to Gafoor’s interviews published in November 2009. Gafoor had said a section of senior police officials in Mumbai refused to be on the ground and take on the 26/11 terrorists.
Hoshiar Singh alleged that the remarks were derogatory. The high court admitted the petition for final hearing.
