Leopard strays into IIT-Bombay campus, efforts to rescue on

A stray leopard entered into the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology at Powai in (IIT) Mumbai on Wednesday, officials said.

A team of the forest department officials reached the IIT campus and efforts are on to rescue the animal.

"A leopard has been sighted this morning in a workshop of metallurgy department of the IIT. The forest officers have arrived and they are examining if the leopard is still present in the campus," Rashmi Udaykumar, IIT’s public relations officer, told PTI.

"As soon as one of our staff members alerted us about the presence of a leopard, we called the forest department officials," Udaykumar added.

She said that IIT officials have cordoned off the entire area "indefinitely" to avoid any loss to life.

Incidents of leopards straying into colonies are nothing new to Mumbai. In May this year, a leopard entered into a settlement in Warlipada, Mulund (West).

IIT authorities have issued advisories to the students after leopard sightings in the past.
