With no verification of details by an online auction site where a fake advertisement was put up, a 24-year-old MBA from Ghatkopar was flooded with nearly 200 calls for purchase of a scooter which he never owned.
On May 25 at around 2.30pm, an unknown person called up Ishan Gindra and offered to buy his black scooter.
“Soon after, I was bombarded with calls from prospective buyers for my non- existent scooter.
Each one of them said that they had seen an advertisement put up by me on an online auction site.
When I logged in to the site, I was shocked to see that there was indeed an advertisement claiming that I wanted to sell my black scratch-less scooter, which had all the required documents and had been used up to 14,000km,” said Gindra.
A photograph of the scooter and Gindra’s mobile phone number, too, was put up on the site.
“Between that Saturday and Wednesday, I got close to 190 phone calls. I could not reject the calls, as often my clients too call from unknown numbers,” he said.
After he wrote to the portal, the advertisement was taken off the website on May 29.
Next Saturday, Gindra got a call from another online auction portal, asking him if he had put up an advertisement to sell a white-coloured car on their portal.
“I told them that I had not placed any such advertisement, after which they did not put up any advertisement. I wish the earlier portal had checked with me before putting up the advertisement,” he said.
“When I contacted the online auction portals to get the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the person who uploaded the advertisements, they asked me to get a complaint registered with the local police.”
Gindra plans to submit a complaint to the Ghatkopar and Bandra-Kurla Complex cyber police station to find the miscreant.
