Meet the city’s new police chief

Sanjeev Dayal is known for his managerial skills and no-nonsense approach. The no-nonsense officer from the Maharashtra cadre of the Indian Police Service batch of 1977 has served in the city during crucial times.

This city and its underbelly are not unknown to Sanjeev S. Dayal.

The no-nonsense officer from the Maharashtra cadre of the Indian Police Service batch of 1977 has served in the city during crucial times.

The 55-year-old is known for his professional integrity and competence. His managerial skills have earned the Commerce graduate the name ‘Chanakya’ in the state IPS circle.

The otherwise low-profile officer had invited the wrath of some politicians when, as joint commissioner of police in 2003, he insisted on transparency in the recruitment of constables and ignored politicans’ recommendations.

A management graduate, this Delhi native started his career as assistant superintendent of police in Nanded. His first posting in Mumbai was as deputy commissioner of police (zone VII) in 1982. He supervised the vast belt from Andheri to Dahisar for six years before being transferred to Latur as superintendent of police.

A year later, he was transferred to Nanded. He then joined the Intelligence Bureau on deputation where he served for four years before returning to Maharashtra and joining as SP Amravati (Rural).

Dayal returned to the state police headquarters as additional director general (DG), law and order, in May 2005. He took over as additional DG, special operations in February 2010.
