Call it ironical but women cops at the Mumbai police control room are very cautious while answering calls these days. Reason: The control room has been receiving random calls from men who regularly harass the policewomen on duty.

Mostly, it is obscene statements, indecent proposals, an occasional ‘I love you’ and sometimes even demands to meet the woman cop answering the phone.
The solution: The police have zeroed in on a few numbers from which such calls are regularly made and have given them names such as ‘nalayak’ (useless) and ‘besharam’ (shameless). So, now, whenever there is a call from one of these numbers, the women cops are able to avoid it.
“We have made a note of 50 calls and are in the process of identifying the callers,” said Vasant Dhoble, assistant commissioner of police, main control room, Mumbai.
The police, however, plan to register FIRs against the callers once they are identified.
“Many a times, the mobile numbers used for such purposes are registered under somebody else’s name. Also, such calls keep our lines busy and delay response to other genuine and important calls,” said Dhoble.
The Mumbai police control room receives around 20,000 calls every day.
