Mumbai: Lesser noise as sound barriers to be fitted

Along the entire stretch of the Sion flyover, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started work on sound barriers because of its proximity to Sion hospital and several residential buildings.

In a relief to residents living next to flyovers, sound barriers are being fitted on these bridges. The Dahisar flyover, BKC and Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road flyover outside IIT Powai already have sound barriers.

With the increase in traffic and proximity of flyovers to the buildings, citizens have been demanding the installation of sound barriers to reduce noise levels. They have also complained of intrusion into their privacy.

Joint project director of MMRDA, Dilip Kawathkar said, “We are expecting the noise levels to reduce by around 45% along the Sion flyover. The exact reduction in decibel levels will be gauged once the fitting work is completed. The work on Lalbaug flyover is set to begin.”

“The supervision of the work is being done by Central Road Research Institute based in Delhi who have designed the sound barriers and will also check the effects of the barriers once fitted,” said an official.
