Mumbai: Man gets 10 years in jail for stabbing woman

A sessions court on Tuesday convicted a man accused of stabbing a woman in 2013 for turning down his proposal for marriage. The accused, Amit Tulsankar, was sentenced to 10 years in jail.

The judge also expressed his displeasure over the law not providing sufficient punishment for such offences.

“The accused is a dangerous person for the society and such elements need to be nipped in the bud, otherwise, it will be very difficult for earning women to move fearlessly in society,” said justice AS Mahatme.

“The punishment to be awarded for a crime needs to be relevant and should conform to, and be consistent with, the atrocity and brutality with which a crime is perpetrated,” Mahatme said.

According to the prosecution, Tulsankar used to stay in the same society as the woman. The woman had alleged Tulsankar harassed her, as she had ignored his marriage proposal. She had also filed several complaints with the Kurla police, saying Tulsankar was following her everywhere. The police warned Tulsankar several times.

The police booked Tulsankar for attempt to murder, and under provisions of the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes (prevention of atrocities) Act. While sentencing him, the court also told Tulsankar to pay a fine of Rs 10,000, which the court said will be paid to the woman.
