Mumbai: Man steals Rs 14L from wife, held in Bihar

In February, Shaikh stole his wife’s money and valuables worth Rs 13.90 lakh and fled to Bihar, from where he had planned to escape to Nepal. However, he was caught by a team from Deonar police station last week.

The lure of money was stronger than a 15-year-old marriage for Deonar resident Mohammed Shaikh, 37.

Shaikh and Mehmunna, 40, have two kids. “Mehmunna worked in Dubai and shifted there three years ago. She regularly visited Mumbai and left cash and gold with her husband,” said Nilesh Shewale, sub-inspector, Deonar police station.

During her visit last month, Mehmunna asked Shaikh where he been keeping the valuables.

“She got suspicious when he gave her evasive answers. A few days later, Shaikh went missing,” said Shewale, adding that the woman filed a police complaint on February 27, following which a case was registered.

The police found out that Shaikh was in Bihar, near Thakurganj, which is close to the Nepal border. “He was planning to escape to Nepal and settle there. A team left for Bihar. We raided his room at 2am on March 6 and arrested him,” said Shewale. He was brought to the city on Sunday.
