A distant relative of the accused said his name was Pappu Sushanto Das and not Pappu Yadav, as the latter had told the police.

On August 4, the woman was travelling alone in the second-class women’s coach adjoining the motorman’s cabin to Churchgate from Malad. When her train reached Grant Road station, a drunk man entered the compartment and allegedly molested her. There was no policeman in the compartment at the time.

Das has been remanded in police custody for further investigation. He was taken for medical tests to GT Hospital on Tuesday.

Das’s cousin, who works at a restaurant near Crawford Market, confirmed that the accused was trying to hide his identity. “He said Das earlier got into trouble after he had sent some lewd text messages to some women in Odisha. We are still to get details of these incidents,” said a GRP officer.

“We have secured his custody till Friday and are questioning him to find out details of his activities here. We will also get in touch with his family,” said Pradip Bijwe, assistant commissioner, GRP.
