Nair Hospital to get clinical skills lab to practise surgery on cadavers

The civic-run Nair Hospital will soon start a clinical skills laboratory in its premises, which will help surgeons hone their surgical skills better by practising operating on cadavers.

“Doctors cannot risk practising on patients. The laboratory will be used for teaching various procedures on cadavers.

This will definitely improve operating skills of surgeons,” said Dr Amresh Baliarsing, head of plastic surgery department.

Before a doctor does his first operation, he has to assist seniors in considerable number of operations.

“Today there is a long learning curve for surgeons. Also, so far, the training was more or less ad-hoc. Now we can think of systematic training,” said Baliarsing.

The laboratory, which at present in the planning stage will be functional by the end of June this year, said doctors. It will comprise facilities such as lights and cameras for audio-visual recording and three microscopes to perform procedures, which cannot be performed with the naked eyes. It will also have a freezer to preserve cadavers. The surgeries can be projected in the auditoriums in the hospital.
