A room in an office complex and another in a chawl were among 12 locations income tax authorities visited Tuesday in their investigation into alleged shell companies that have invested in BJP chief Nitin Gadkari's Purti group.

The taxmen called it an enquiry - not a search or survey - under an I-T act section that gives them powers on the discovery and production of evidence.
The office at Damji Shamji Trade Center in Vidyavihar west is the address for 17 companies with Shivam Sharma as director of all 17.
The I-T team found the room actually houses a firm founded by Sharma but with no link to Purti. The room in an Andheri east chawl is registered as the address of five companies with investments in Purti.
There was similar I-T action in Pune, Nagpur and Kolkata.
