A trip to Nepal, which they thought would help them relax after their TYBMM exams, turned out to be the most harrowing experience with a lesson in hospitality for four students from Jai Hind College.
The group from Mumbai -- Arushi Sethi, Sahej Sethi, Saachi Chandokh and Prateek Lata – reached Nepal last week. “We wanted to take some time off after our exams. We landed in Nepal last week, and stayed with a Nepali friend in Thame,” said Arushi.

While they were busy sightseeing for the first few days, Saturday’s earthquake changed it all. “While having breakfast, we suddenly heard a loud thud. Our Nepali friend asked us to move to an open space. We managed to escape with minor injuries, but my friend’s mother got stuck. Local residents put their lives in danger to ensure she was safe. There was chaos all over, but people were going out of their way to save others,” she said.
Arushi and her friends spent the rest of the day in the garden and at other open spaces, before heading to the Kathmandu airport. “The only flights operating were the rescue flights to India. We were among the 5,000 Indians waiting at the airport. We were terrified. But after three hours, we got a flight to Delhi and we reached the capital city at 12.45am on Monday,” said Arushi, who, along with her three friends, is expected to reach the city soon.
