The Juhu police are stuck with the job of looking after a 35-year-old Polish national and her two-year-old daughter, while facing legal complications in the process of deporting her to Poland. The woman, who had arrived in the country in 2008 on a six-month visa, did not return after the visa expired.

The police have kept her at Juhu police station for more than two weeks after seeking permission from the special branch. Two women constables have been told to look after Joanna Kucharska and her daughter. While the police are trying to find ways to deport her to Poland, Joanna claims her daughter was born an Indian citizen, adding to the problems of the police officers.

Vishwas Nangre-Patil, additional commissioner of police, west region, said, “We have approached the Polish consulate and have got a positive response from their officials. We are in the process of deporting her.”

Joanna told police that she came to New Delhi and later reached Vrindavan. She then married a Polish man in India and gave birth in 2011. Joanna, said she has no relatives in Poland and is not in contact with her husband either. She arrived in Mumbai a few months ago, reached ISKCON temple in Juhu and started living there. Temple authorities then learnt that she was staying without a visa.
