Investigate the allegations of a 25-year-old woman that her in-laws tried to burn her due to which she suffered a miscarriage, the Bombay High Court told the Dindoshi police on Wednesday.
“Allegations made by her (Jahaara Khan) are serious. We feel the police should examine her complaint and take action in accordance with law,” the court said.
Khan’s petition said she married Javed Khan in January 2006 and was living at Goregaon (East). Her in-laws started ill-treating her six months after the wedding.
On August 21, 2007, Khan’s brother-in-law, Sajid, threatened her younger sister, Gulshan, that he would throw acid on her face if she refused to marry him. Gulshan lodged a police complaint.
Khan, who was expecting her second child, went to confront her in-laws. Her in-laws allegedly poured kerosene on her and tried to set her on fire, but Khan escaped. Her petition said she had to undergo an abortion because she was injured in the assault.
The Dindoshi police did not lodge a First Information Report. “There can be no dispute that if it’s a cognisable offence, police need to register FIR,” the HC said. Khan had even approached the State Human Rights Commission. The commission disposed of her compliant after the police claimed the families had reached a compromise.
