The education department put up the list of vacancies in colleges on Friday. There were more than 57,000 vacant seats in colleges after the online process ended on July 10 with the final merit list.

The offline admission process is only for those who could not apply online or did not get a seat in the online process. The offline merit list will be put up on Monday.

Colleges saw a healthy turnout on the first day of offline admissions on Friday. “We had around 30 applications in each stream, with some people cancelling their admission elsewhere and coming here,” said Swapna Durve, vice-principal of Mithibai College.

Colleges are supposed to accept applications from those who are have scored above the final online merit list cut-off, but can allow for a five percentage point margin below that as well.

It is not clear why there are still many vacancies, even in the sought after colleges, with so many students vying to get in. “When the department sent us the merit lists earlier, the did not account for our full capacity,” said Jyoti Thakur, vice principal of Jai Hind College.
