Karan Jethwa was on platform number 3 at Sion station on Friday, said the Dadar government railway police. A resident of Gandhi Nagar in Ghatkopar (West), Jethwa was a first year physiotherapy student at Lokmanya Tilak municipal medical college in Sion.

“The patient was brought dead on January 4 at 5.50pm. His skull had split and his brain was popping out," said Dr Suleiman Merchant, dean of Sion Hospital. But Jethwa was not another patient at Sion hospital, he was a student at the adjoining Lokmanya Tilak medical college. “This comes as a shock to all of us. After his classes, Jethwa would come back to college every day to study in the library,” added Dr Merchant.

At 5.30pm on Friday, Jethwa did not realise that he was trailing close to the edge of the platform as he was busy talking on the phone. Immersed in his conversation, he did not hear or see the fast local approaching the platform, said the railway police. Being a fast train, it did not stop at the platform.

“A case of accidental death has been registered and we are investigating the matter further. Prima facie, no foul play is suspected in the incident,” said an official from the Dadar railway police.
