‘Took us 4 hours to find my brother’s body’

The family rushed down to find out that a colleague of Mukesh, a diamond trader at Opera House, had come to tell them that he was injured and taken to Hurkisondas Hospital at Charni Road.

“His colleague only knew his address so he came to the building and started yelling,” said Aruna, Mukesh’s sister-in-law. “We rushed to the hospital and it took us four hours to find him through all the chaos. There was blood everywhere and it was the toughest time of our lives.” Mukesh’s wife, Sheila, has gone numb. She did not even react when she saw her husband’s body being taken away for the funeral, said a family member.

The family of diamond traders includes six brothers and two sisters. The fourth brother, Mukesh, was a favourite with the children. Four of the six brothers live together at their home in Opera House. “He was our favourite chachu. We will really miss him,” said Shelly, Mukesh’s 11-year-old niece. Mukesh’s son, Mohit, 10, has spent all morning lying in his mother’s lap trying to unsuccessfully catch her attention.
