Motorists plying on the city’s first bicycle tracks to be opened in April at Bandra-Kurla Complex could be in a spot of bother.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has now roped in the traffic department to ensure discipline.
“We will ensure that the tracks remain only for bicycles. We will seek assistance of the traffic police to ensure traffic rules are followed,” said MMRDA joint project director (PR), Dilip Kawathkar.
The MMRDA is constructing cycling tracks which are 12-km long at the cost of Rs six crore. Once completed and operational, the tracks will be declared no parking zones.
“We have received an assurance from the traffic police that their personnel will keep an eye on the tracks so that they are not misused,” Kawathkar added.
To differentiate from the road and footpath, the tracks will be painted green.
The MMRDA started a public awareness campaign and has written to corporates and schools operating in the complex to start using the tracks.
The MMRDA has made a provision of Rs 150 crore to improve BKC’s internal roads. The money for the bicycle tracks will be spent from this corpus.
