The police said the accident was the result of two youths — Mohit Singh, 20 and Bhavani Singh, 20 — performing a stunt in which passengers lean out of moving trains with palms held out for those at platforms or on trains going in the opposite direction to clap. The youths have been arrested for causing death due to negligence.

According to the police, the deceased, Maqbool Ansari, was standing near the general compartment’s door when the duo boarded the slow local at Santacruz. Mohit and Bhavani hung out from the pole near the door in front of Ansari.

At around 2.45pm, when the train was approaching Goregaon station, a commuter on a Churchgate-bound local reciprocated by extending his hand. The duo leant back, obscuring Ansari’s view. The passenger’s hand hit the Dharavi resident, who fell off the train, sustaining grievous injuries. Commuters in the train held the duo and handed them over to the railway police when the train reached Goregaon station. Ansari was rushed to Bhagwati hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
