Vikhroli’s pop-up museum: From a warehouse to an art space

A one-day pop-up museum called Museum of Memory will host a range of art and culture exhibits and activities at a large, defunct warehouse on Godrej’s Vikhroli campus on December 15, reports Riddhi Doshi.

“The warehouse is set to be torn down the following day, so just before it goes, we thought it would be a good idea to host an arts event for the city there,” said Parmesh Shahani, head of Godrej Culture Lab, the Mumbai-based think-tank that is organising the event. “Such pop-up museums are a well-known phenomenon in the West. It’s time such events were organised in the city.”

The Godrej pop-up museum is also an attempt to create a collaborative platform for artist and the public in central Mumbai, where there are few art and cultural spaces, Shahani added.

On offer are an arts museum that will display video art, graffiti and typography works and murals, photographs and sculptures by artists such as Meera Devidayal, Vaibhav Raj Shah and Dheeraj Kaku.

Sanjana Kapoor’s theatre group Junoon will perform mono-acts and group acts. There will also be a dance performance by Amrita Bagchi, a concert by artist Geetu Hinduja and her fusion band, Brown Folk, film screenings and talks.

Also on display will be racing cars and robots built by students of KJ Somaiya College.

“What is amazing is that the space that will be buzzing with activity on one day and will cease to exist the next,” said Shahani. “Like a little bit of magic in the city.”
