A 28-year-old woman with minor burn injuries died at Nair Hospital, Mumbai Central, on Saturday, allegedly because of a delay in treatment after she complained of breathlessness and abdominal pain.
Bhargavi Jadhav was admitted on July 14 with 18 per cent burns on her feet after she dropped hot water.
"We admitted her as we could not bring her to hospital everyday to change the dressing," said Santosh Jadhav (35), Bhargavi's brother-in-law and Agripada resident.
At 1 am on Saturday, Jadhav developed complications.
"She was given laxatives. Soon, she complained of abdominal pain and breathlessness. We called the doctor but no one came until 5.15 am. She died two hours later," said Jadhav.
"There was no reason for the patient to die. We will get the post-mortem report on Monday. If the staff is guilty, they will be punished," said Dr Mahesh Shah, deputy dean, Nair Hospital.
The Agripada police have registered a case of accidental death.
"We'll take action after we get the report," said sub-inspector Chandrakant Khanvilkar.
