Woman moves court alleging brother-in-law assaulted in police custody

A 28-year-old woman has moved the Bombay high court against the personnel of Bhiwandi City police station alleging that her brother-in-law, Sadiq Akhtar Khan, 23, was assaulted while in police custody.

A 28-year-old woman has moved the Bombay high court against the personnel of Bhiwandi City police station alleging that her brother-in-law, Sadiq Akhtar Khan, 23, was assaulted while in police custody.

The petition was filed against senior inspector RC Patil, constables Rahim Latif Shaikh, Shelke, Pathavale, Khorpade and Sandeep Gosalkar – all attached to Bhiwandi City police station. It also names the deputy commissioner of police (City Zone II, Bhiwandi) and Thane’s police commissioner as respondents.

Amrin Asgar Khan said on December 23 last year, the Bhiwandi City Police lodged a complaint against Sadiq and his mother, Safiya Akhtar Khan, for using criminal force to deter the policemen from discharging their duty. The policemen, according to the petition, had visited Sadiq’s shop for an inquiry.

The petition alleges that after taking custody of Sadiq on December 30 last year, police brought him to his residence and assaulted him. “Sadiq was brought to the residence, tied with rope. After taking him to the place where the incident of obstruction took place (a week ago) they assaulted him brutally with fists and kicks,” the petition said.

On December 31, judge AP Khanorkar passed a court order stating that Sadiq had complained of ill-treatment by police who beat and abused him. “I have personally examined him and have found red, round impressions like coagulation of blood on both his hands. There also appears to be a coagulation of blood in his eyes.
