While he made his mark quite early in his career by producing music for artistes such as Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen and Adele, it took Mark Ronson some time to draw attention as a singer. Finally, with Uptown Funk, a collaborative project with Bruno Mars, the English musician has been consistently topping charts around the world. In an email interview, the Grammy-winner talks about his newfound success as a singer, and more.

Uptown Funk has been topping charts globally. How do you feel?
Even though I was expecting this song to be a big hit, I know that, in 2014, no one was expecting me to come up with a single that will top all charts. However, I knew that this song would get a good feedback.

Did you feel low when your debut album, Here Comes The Fuzz, didn't do well? What motivated you at that time?
My passion towards my work was my motivation. Yes, in the beginning, it was a little shaky, but I did not deviate from my passion.

Why did you decide to collaborate with Bruno Mars?
This song needed a funk flavour to it, and his presence made a lot of difference in making the music with the right mood and expertise. We had an amazing time working together, and are looking forward to do so again.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Be it DJing, playing at parties or recording albums - each one stands out. I think 2003 was a remarkable year for me with the launch of my first album.

Now that things are looking up for you as a lead artiste, how do you plan to sustain the success?
I put in more effort to make my music loved by the youth, by keeping it trendy and funky, with the flavour of the late '70s and the early '80s.

What's next for you?
I don't know yet. I worked hard to complete the album, and it's such a relief that it is over.
