It’s been more than 20 years, but the Indian indie rock fan’s ears can instantly recognise a certain mellifluous rasp belting out a harmonic Pretty child, which was also India’s first music video to air on the then new MTV. Indus Creed had given India its first rock anthem. Suddenly, rock shows and stars were watchable celebrities too.

The original Rock ‘n’ Roll Renegades, like their album namesake, disbanded in the early 2000s. Now its front man and vocalist Uday Benegal, guitarist Mahesh Tinaikar and keyboardist Zubin Balaporia are bringing Indus Creed back with a new line-up and sound. They will play their first gig tonight.

Drummer Jai Row Kavi and bassist Jayesh Gandhi are the new members on board. Benegal is obviously excited. “We disbanded in the ’90s when I went to New York. I moved back to the city two years ago and was busy with other things – movies and playback singing. But reviving the band has been on my mind for long. I am happy its finally working out,” says an elated Benegal, who like many of his rocker colleagues got bitten by the Bollywood bug and sang Life is crazy for Wake Up Sid (2009).
