NEW DELHI: A war of words has erupted within political circles over the government report that India clocked 7.9% GDP growth in the last quarter, with the BJP lauding PM Narendra Modi for the feat and the Congress accusing him of ignoring the common man.
The ruling party said that India had achieved the growth despite “political adversities”, which was an outcome of the government’s hard work.
“Due to Modi’s charismatic leadership and vision, India has managed to outpace China and become the fastest growing economy. It is the pro-growth policies of the NDA government that have led to India’s impressive growth,” Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh said in a statement.
BJP general secretary Bhupender Yadav attacked the Congress for opposing the government’s legislative agenda and said that while for Modi democracy meant “of the people, by the people, for the people”, the Congress only focussed on one family.
The Congress on the other hand shot back at the BJP, taking potshots at the right-wing party’s ‘Desh Badal Raha Hai’ theme song by claiming that higher inflation and lower job growth were the only changes that had happened.
“The Modi Government in its characteristic manner has provided a return gift to the people by increasing the petrol and diesel prices for the third consecutive time in the last 30 days,” Congress spokesman Sushmita Dev said.
