The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has given in principle approval of Rs 3 lakh from the PM’s National Relief Fund to Dorris Francis for her treatment. The 57-year-old is battling cancer and the family is finding difficult to pay for her treatment.
Dorris is a traffic volunteer from Ghaziabad, manning the busy Khoda-Indirapuram cut since 2009, after her 20-year-old daughter was killed in an accident at the same spot.
Her health deteriorated during Diwali and she was diagnosed with cancer. She was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences where she was operated upon on November 23.

Her daughter sold off her bike for Rs 20,000 and her husband planned to pledge their house in Khoda for Rs 25,000.
“We are overwhelmed and thankful that the Prime Minister intervened to help her out. His gesture will help us get treatment for my mother. Other residents have also supported us and stood by us in testing times,” said Monika, Dorris’ daughter.
“The case of Smt. Dorris Francis has been considered and a grant of Rs 3,00,000 (three lakhs only) from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to partially defray the expense involved in her cancer treatment is sanctioned in-principle for taking treatment at AIIMS, New Delhi (sic),” the letter stated.

{{/usCountry}}The communication sent to the medical superintendent of AIIMS also stated that the hospital shall assume responsibility for her treatment and furnish every detail of the treatment and expenditure in a specified format, to enable release of payment.
“There are many good Samaritans who are still approaching us in order to contribute to help out Dorris,” said Alok Kumar, founder, Federation of Apartment Owner Association, Indirapuram.
On November 30, before the PMO’s response came in, Dorris was transferred to Max Hospital in Vaishali, where the authorities began her treatment, free of cost. It is now up to the family to decide whether they want to keep Dorris in Max or avail of the PMO’s offer to get treated at AIIMS.
