The incident occurred on Monday evening when two men on a bike threw acid on the victim, a dietician, while she was on her way home after dropping her child off at a tuition class. Police said the pillion rider on the motorcycle was prime accused Rahul Garg, a resident of Sector 9, Raj Nagar.

His friend, Umang Pratap Singh, a resident of D Block, Shashtri Nagar, was driving the motorcycle.

The police said Garg masked his face with a scarf and held the jar of acid while Umang drove the motorcycle. They had been keeping a watch on the woman since the morning of August 20 and were waiting for her to drop her child off at the tuition class.

“The woman suffered 60% burns and is currently undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. Garg met the woman on a social networking website in October 2017, and, soon, they started seeing each other. In March, the woman told him that she was married and had a child. This upset Garg as he wanted to marry her. Garg is a divorcee (since 2015),” Vaibhav Krishna, senior superintendent of police (SSP), said.

An arts graduate and a chemical trader, Garg on August 11, approached a friend of his whose relative sells acid.

He allegedly procured from the man a litre of acid in a plastic jar.

The police said they are yet to establish whether it was acid or some other form of chemical.

“A forensic examination will be taken up to ascertain this,” the SSP said.
