Akhil Kumar terminates contract with pro boxing promoter

Akhil Kumar had turned into a professional boxer earlier but has terminated his contract with his promoter.

Akhil Kumar, India’s Commonwealth Games medallist who made his pro-boxing debut in August, has terminated his contract with promoter Neerav Tomar, whose company also manages Beijing Olympics bronze medallist Vijender Singh.

The brief professional tie-up between Kumar and Tomar has gone sour with the boxer alleging his promoter failed to honour his commitments on several issues, including the organising of foreign training and pro bouts.

Akhil Kumar said: “I was supposed to fight as many as six bouts in 12 months and train abroad. But after one pro fight nothing has happened. It has hurt my progress on the pro circuit. So I have terminated my contract,’’ he told Hindustan Times.

Akhil Kumar, however, plans to pursue his pro career and is searching for a new promoter.

Tomar put the ball back in Akhil Kumar’s court saying the Haryana boxer was supposed to fight his second pro bout in December but never got permission from Haryana Police. He is a DSP in the state force. ‘’So, it’s not our fault,’ Tomar said.

On termination of the contract, Tomar said he wasn’t aware of the situation as Akhil Kumar hasn’t spoken to him.

‘’We will work out a solution,’’ he said.
