Cahill, the first amateur to play in the modern-day tournament, led 5-4 at the end of Monday’s first session at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield and extended his advantage to 8-5.
But five-time world champion O’Sullivan pulled back to 8-8 only for Cahill to take the next two frames, with the 23-year-old’s break of 53 completing a dramatic win.
