On the first day of the PSA Squash Masters at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, Indian youngsters were outdone by some of the biggest names.
Australian Cameron Pilley, gold medallist in the mixed doubles at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, thrashed unseeded Sandeep Jangra 11-2, 11-2, 11-6, taking only 19 minutes to wrap up the match.
Sixth seeded Egyptian Wael el Hindi, ranked 12th on the PSA list, beat Siddharth Suchde 12-10, 11-5, 11-7. Harinder Pal Sandhu fought back against Egypt's Omar Mossad but buckled in the final two games, going down 8-11, 10-12, 10-12.
For second seed James Willstrop, ranked fifth in the world, it took some effort to overcome the unseeded Mohd Ali Anwar Reda 11-13, 11-5, 11-2, 11-9. The Egyptian took
the first game 13-11 after an inspired comeback, having gone down 5-8 in the opening 10 minutes. But Willstrop picked up pace in the remaining games and sealed the match in 56 minutes. Reda picked up an injury on
the final point, after falling heavily on his ankle. He returned after a three-minute timeout to concede the match.
Cheered on by his English teammates, who were among the few spectators, Willstrop said he had performed consistently throughout the season, the statement backed by the fact that he made it to the finals of the World Championships, Commonwealth Games and British Grand Prix.
