Onam, the annual Malayali harvest festival, is celebrated during the Malayali month of Chingam (August - September) and marks the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali. This year, it will be celebrated from August 30 to September 8. During these 10-days, people of the state, both young and old, participate in several events with a lot of enthusiasm. Atham (Day 1): The festival of Onam begins with Atham. On this day, a grand procession Athachamayam is led from Vamanamoorthy Thirrikara Temple in Kochi. This year, it will be observed on August 30.(AP)

Chithira (Day 2): This is the second day of celebrations in the 10-day-long Onam festivities. Since there is nothing much to do on Chithira, people mark this day by cleaning their homes and visiting temples.(REUTERS)
