On this day in 1889, a group of socialist groups and trade unions picked 1 May to show support for workers. They chose this date to remember the Haymarket Riot in Chicago (1886), where a bomb killed seven police officers and at least four other people.(AP)
Five years later, US President Grover Cleveland, worried about the connection between Workers’ Day and socialism, made Labour Day an official holiday in the United States.(AP)
