A 30-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly ordering the murder of his wife and their eight-month-old son in Pune district of Maharashtra over an extra-marital affair, according to authorities.
Three other people, including Datta Bhondave’s alleged lover Sonali Jawle and two friends Prashant Bhor, 25, and Pawan Jadhav, 21, were also arrested. The police are looking for another person involved in the murders.
Datta and Ashwini had been married for four years and 24-year-old Jawle, a clerk at a local high school in Hinjewadi, met him on social media and knew him for at least two years.
Bhondave, a resident of Maval, had put out a contract of Rs 2 lakh for the murder of his family, according to the investigation by Pune Police’s crime branch and officials of Wakad and Hinjewadi police stations.
However, his four-year-old daughter Anushka was in Nighoje, near Mahalunge, with her grandfather on the night of the murders.
Datta called the police on Saturday night and told them he was driving with Ashwini and son Anuj through Nerhe, around four kilometres from the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway when two men forced their way into their cars. He added that the men killed Ashwini and Anuj in a violent robbery.
Based on his complaint, a case under Section 302 (murder), 379 (robbery) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at Hinjewadi police station on Sunday morning.
The charges will now be updated based on the developments.
“He stopped the car under the pretext of nausea. When he got out, the attackers (Prashant Bhor and Pawan Jadhav) entered the vehicle and strangled his wife, Ashwini,” Raghunath Unde, police inspector (crime) at Hinjewadi police station, said.
“And, probably when the child started crying, they killed him as well,” he added.
Bhor and Jadhav then asked him to take the car off the road. Datta is suspected to have handed over his mobile phone and that of his wife’s, her gold necklace and Rs 50,000 in cash to them.
Unde said Datta then informed the police about the incident posing as a victim.
“They had planned this for the past month. He told us the incident happened at 9:30pm, but he reported it only at 11:30pm. His wounds also looked superficial,” senior police inspector Nitin Vaykar said explaining the reason behind their suspicion against Datta.
While Ashwini was a resident of Wakad, Datta’s family members are natives of Ravet and lived in Maval.
“She was with us for the past four days. They had dinner and left from our place in Dangechowk at 8:30pm,” Ashwini’s cousin Mohan Shinde said
