The civic body has set a target of Rs 2,400 crore from residents as property tax for the current financial year.

Also, to boost the tax collection, the PMC this year is giving a rebate of 10 per cent and 5 per cent to the residents who pay tax before May 31. The residents who pay property tax below Rs 25,000 per annum will get a 10 per cent rebate and those who pay above Rs 25,000 tax, will get 5 per cent rebate.

According to senior PMC officials, “In the last two years, PMC has registered a deficit at the end of the financial year in the collection of property tax. As revenue could not be generated due to the deficit in the overall property tax collection, fund allocation for many developmental projects was hampered. Consequently, we have taken the property tax collection work on a priority basis and the civic officers have been instructed to minutely observe those who refrain from paying their property taxes.”

Earlier, the property tax collection was done on the basis of built-up area. However, now it will be done on the basis of carpet area of the property.

“Residents should voluntarily come forward to pay property taxes as the funds generated through this will be used for the development of these villages itself,” said PMC officials.
