Cops arrest criminal who threatened Poona College principal for admission

Santosh Kate, assistant police inspector, who is the investigating officer in the case, said that the accused went inside Shaikh’s cabin and threatened him with dire consequences if he did not give an admission to his brother.

The Cantonment police have arrested Farukh Shaikh, alias Guddu (23), a resident of Mominpura, who is a murder case accused, in connection with vandalism and death threat to Anwar Shaikh, principal of Anjuman E Khairul Islam ‘s Poona college of arts, commerce and science. The accused was arrested by a team of detection branch (DB) personnel after an FIR was lodged against him at the Cantonment police station on Friday. Farukh was produced before the cantonment court, which remanded him in police custody for two days.

Farukh walked into the office of Shaikh around 2 pm on Friday and demanded admission to Class 11. He abused him and banged a sharp machete against the table before the leaving the spot. Farukh told the principal that this was just the beginning and that the next time, he would kill him if admission were not given to his candidates.

“He broke the table glass with a sharp weapon and verbally threatened the principal. He has a murder case registered against him at Khadak police station and investigations are on to further probe his criminal activities,” Kate said. Farukh has been booked under Sections 452,506(2),341,336,427 and 135 of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Shaikh had brought a meritorious system into vogue, which had led to a financial setback to the influential groups and angered them, allegedly leading to the murderous attack, college administration officials confided with the media. Meanwhile, the college principal’s association has strongly condemned the incident and a special meeting was held at the college campus on Saturday, where academicians expressed fear about the growing menace of criminals in educational institutions and lack of fear of the law enforcement agencies. The forum demanded a special investigation be carried out to find the conspirators behind the incident and probe whether they were related to any political or organised crime syndicates.
