The family resided in Kanhur Mesai region of Shirur in Pune district. The family was reportedly returning from a pilgrimage to a temple in Alandi on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, according to the police. Popat was riding the motorbike, while Shaila was riding pillion and holding the child.

“He worked as a labourer, while his wife was a housewife. We have arrested the driver and he is still in our custody. But, I’m not sure of his bail situation as I’m caught up with the Bhima-Koregaon investigation,” said police inspector (PI) Ramesh Galande of Shikrapur police station.

The arrested dumper truck driver was driving a 10-year-old six-wheeler truck manufactured by Tata Motors. He was driving along the Shirur-Pune lane when he tried to turn on Rautwadi road without warning, the police said. As a result, he hit the motorbike on which the Gorade family was riding, killing them instantly. Gorade was riding a year-old Honda Shine.
