Prices of vegetables, like cucumber, potatoes, onions and French beans, have shot up by almost 10 per cent on Sunday.
According to the agricultural produce market committee (APMC) officials, the wholesale prices of vegetables, like cucumber and French beans, are expected to increase in the next few days owing to rise in demand. According to agricultural produce market committee officials,there is an increase in the demand for cucumber, lemon and many other summer vegetables, leading to the hike in price.
On the other hand, increase in the supply of tomato (6,000 bags), green chilli (from Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu),and groundnut (150 bags) from surrounding states has led to a fall in prices by 15 per cent.
There is a steady supply of potatoes and onions, and hence, their prices are also stable. A total of 50 trucks of potatoes and 110 trucks of onions arrived from the states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat at agricultural produce market committee, Pune. Onions and potatoes are being sold at ₹65 to ₹85 and ₹140 to ₹170 per 10 kilogrammes, respectively.
"The supply of vegetables to agricultural produce market committee, especially that of cucumber and French beans, has been reduced, resulting in the hike in prices by 10 per cent. Cucumber is consumed on a large scale during summer, because of which there is huge demand. As of now, we are unable to meet the high demand of these commodities," said Vilas Bhujbal, president of Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard Traders' and Agents' Association, Pune.
