According to the women’s cell at the Pune police commissionerate, the city has been receiving a steady number of male complainants over the past few months. Of the 837 complaints received by the women’s cell in the last five months, 146 complaints were registered by men.
In January, 24 of the 152 applications received by the women’s cell were filed by male complainants. Similarly, in February, 23 of the 132 applications received in March, 49 of the 209 cases in April and 25 out of the 182 applications in May received by the women’s cell were filed by men.
It is not uncommon for men to file cases against women for allegedly trying to manipulate their family into submitting to her demands like separate housing, remarks Prarthana Sadavarte, an advocate and social worker, who also serves as a counsellor at the women’s cell.
Sadavarte said that men also file cases against their wives over suspected affairs. The cell had recently received a case wherein a man claimed that his wife did not stop working even when she returned home and did not spend quality time with him. Cases of suspected extramarital affairs are also common among male applicants, Sadavarte points out. These cases generally come from people with a financially stable life and high academic qualifications.

The various biased laws are used as a tool by these women to torture their husbands. Acting on the complaint of such women, police arrest the husband and humiliate, and torture him. Such incidents cause depression among men, leading to a high suicide rate, the organisation said in a statement.
