Pune Despite students of the English department going on a hunger strike asking for the final examinations to be postponed, the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has decided to conduct the final exams as per schedule on April 27.
From April 25 onwards, a total of 33 students from the department of English have gone on a hunger strike outside the department appealing to the vice-chancellor to hear their demands to postpone the final exams as they were not allotted preparatory leave.
According to the press release, the students had approached the vice-chancellor on April 24, 2018, to postpone the exams, which was followed by a discussion between the senior officials and the students. Despite this discussion, the students went ahead with their hunger strike.
Prafulla Pawar,head of department of management sciences (Pumba), Prabhakar Desai, director, student welfare department and Hemant Shirsath, professor of English department, met the students and gave them various options which was rejected by the students.
Even the vice-chancellor sent out a message inviting the striking students for a discussion, but no one responded. The students were given an option, wherein exams would begin from May 5, which was also rejected by the students, who demanded that the exams be held from May 15.
