13-year-old delivers baby in Ludhiana; man booked for rape

In a shocking incident, a 13-year-old on Sunday delivered a girl child in the restroom of a private hospital where she was allegedly taken by her family for treating stomach ache. Claiming to be unaware of the pregnancy, the victim’s family is now not ready to accept the newborn and their daughter.
Police said according to her family, the minor came in contact with a vegetable vendor who lived near their home at Raghunath Enclave area a year ago and was allegedly repeatedly raped by him.
Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) station house officer Devinder Sharma said a case was registered on Monday against an unidentified person under Section 376 (rape) and 6 (protection of Children from Sexual Offences) POCSO Act 2012. The police have launched a manhunt to arrest the accused.
The family claims that they had taken the victim to a private hospital after she complained of stomach ache. The family was then asked to get her urine test done and when the minor went to the restroom for the same, she delivered a baby.
Thereafter, she was referred to Mother and Child Hospital on Sunday evening. The victim has been kept in a separate room in the maternity ward of the hospital where police constables have also been stationed.
The victim’s mother, a domestic help, said a year ago, the victim used to stay at home to take care of her younger sister who was only two-year-old at that time. The victim recently started working as a domestic help at BRS Nagar.
“We have lost our honour due to this act of our daughter and she has brought shame to our family. We will neither accept the baby nor daughter now,” said the mother of the victim.
When HT team met the victim she said that a vegetable vendor, Deepak, had befriended her who used to live near her home. She added that they had developed a physical relationship. “However a month ago, he threatened me that I should not tell anything to my parents,” said the victim.
Dr Mandeep Khangura of a civil hospital said a child is born premature but was out of danger. She said an age determination test would be conducted on the victim on Wednesday.
The family is now refusing to accept their daughter and her newborn child
